The counties of England, Wales a nd
Scotland were reorganised in 1974 and again in 1998. Many of the
boundaries were changed and some of the counties were renamed or
even disappeared from the UK altogether.
So your town may have been in a different county in 1787.

Yorkshire, the largest English county was divided into the North,
East and West Ridings. Due still to the large size of West Riding,
John Cary had to engrave it as two separate maps, i.e. north part
and south part. Cary's map of Wales is also divided into North Wales
and South Wales. The maps of Scotland and Ireland that we offer
are not by John Cary but are reproduced in the same style of that
period.
